Exam pattern
| Stage | Marks | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Written exam (MCQ) | 170 | Maths 20, English 30, General Knowledge 120. Class 10 standard. |
| Bengali or Kokborok paper | 100 (qualifying) | 40% to pass. Not added to merit. Bengali was assigned if you did not choose. |
| Physical standards + walking test | Qualifying | Only for those who clear the written cut-off. |
| Interview | 30 | Can be rescheduled without notice. |
| Medical | Fit / not fit | By the Health Department, after selection. |
NoteGeneral Knowledge is 120 of 170 marks. That is more than 70% of the paper. Most candidates lose the exam here, not in Maths.
Syllabus
General Knowledge (120 marks)
The department lists these areas: Tripura, North-East, India, flora, fauna, climate, plant nutrition, soil, river system, life science, physical science and law. Tripura and forest-related topics should come first, because books for national exams do not cover them.
Mathematics (20 marks) and English (30 marks)
Both are Class 10 standard. English has more marks than Maths, so do not skip it. Grammar, vocabulary and simple comprehension are enough to score well.
Bengali or Kokborok (qualifying)
Class 10 syllabus. Read the textbook once, then practise old questions. You only need 40%, but failing this paper removes you from the list even with a high written score.
Physical standards and walking test
| Candidate | Min. height | Chest (normal) | Chest expansion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Male, General and SC | 163 cm | 79 cm | 5 cm |
| Male, ST | 152 cm | 79 cm | 5 cm |
| Female, UR and SC | 150 cm | 74 cm | 5 cm |
| Female, ST | 145 cm | 74 cm | 5 cm |
After the check, men walk 25 km and women walk 16 km, both within 4 hours. Women must also bring a self-declaration that they are not pregnant on the test day. If you applied for both Forester and Forest Guard, you take the physical test once.
A simple study plan
- Weeks 1–3: Tripura GK (history, geography, rivers, climate, districts, tribes) and North-East basics. Write short notes.
- Weeks 4–5: Forest, plants, animals, soil and basic science from Class 8–10 books.
- Weeks 6–7: English grammar and Maths practice. Keep one hour a day for each.
- Throughout: walk 5 km a day and increase slowly. Do not wait for the written result to start.
- Last 2 weeks: full mocks, then revise only your notes.
Pro tipStart the walk practice now. A 25 km walk in 4 hours needs a steady pace of about 6 km an hour, and this takes weeks to build.
