Typing tests in government exams: what to expect

Many government jobs for clerks, data entry operators, typists, junior assistants and stenographers add a typing test or skill test after the written exam. You sit at a computer, type a passage in English or Hindi, and the system counts how fast and how correctly you type.

Some typing tests are only qualifying: you must reach a set speed to stay in the selection, but the marks do not add to your merit. Others carry marks. The Tripura High Court Junior Administrative Assistant exam, for example, has a 20-mark English type test in its second phase.

Speed is written in words per minute (wpm) or in key depressions per hour (KDPH). Five key presses count as one word, so 1 wpm is 300 KDPH. The table beside this text shows the numbers that exam notices use most often.

SSC

SSC Stenographer: shorthand skill test (Grade C and D)

100 wpmdictation, Grade C

80 wpmdictation, Grade D

10 mindictation

This test is not a copy-typing test. You listen to one dictation of 10 minutes, at 100 words per minute for Grade C or 80 for Grade D, then type it out on a computer within the transcription time: 40 minutes (Grade C) or 50 minutes (Grade D) in English, and 55 or 65 minutes in Hindi. The skill test is qualifying. A typing test like this page still builds the accuracy you need for the transcription.

Check the notice. This page is a guide. Speed, time, accuracy rules and marks can change in every recruitment, and the notice of your exam is final.

How your typing test result is worked out

Net speed counts only the characters you typed correctly, divided by five and by the minutes used. This is the number to compare with an exam's required speed. Raw speed counts every character, right or wrong.

Accuracy is the share of your key presses that were correct. A mistake you fix with backspace still counts, because it shows how clean your typing is. Consistency shows how steady your speed was through the test.

The graph shows your speed second by second, and the keyboard shows which keys you missed most. Practise those keys first. Your best speed for each test length is saved in your own browser only.

How to improve your typing speed

Accuracy first, speed second

Slow down until you type almost without mistakes. Speed grows by itself once the keys are in your fingers.

Look at the screen

Keep your eyes on the text, not the keys. Learn the home row and let each finger own its keys.

Short daily practice

Fifteen to twenty minutes every day works better than one long session a week.

Practise on a real keyboard

Exam centres use a computer keyboard. A phone keyboard builds a different habit.

Is there a Hindi typing test?

This test is in English. For Hindi typing tests, practise on the Kruti Dev or Mangal fonts that the exam names, using the Hindi keyboard of your computer.

Is my result saved?

Only your best speed for each test length is kept, in this browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to MockBlast.

Can I paste text into the box?

No. Pasting is switched off so the result shows your real typing.
